CHARACTER NAME: Cal Kestis
CANON: Star Wars (specifically Jedi: Fallen Order)
TIMELINE: post-JFO, 14 BBY
AGE: Unspecified, but around 18
REFERENCE: link
PERSONALITY: (spoilers for JFO)
At the beginning of the game, a lot of Cal's personality is directly shaped by the Purge, the massacre of every Jedi in the galaxy. This massive betrayal, along with the guilt of surviving and sense of failure in letting his master die, made Cal distrustful, reclusive, and paranoid of being discovered as a Jedi survivor. For five years, he put his head down and lived in hiding from the Empire on Bracca, where, according to his data sheet on the Star Wars site, he was quiet, hard-working, and generally well-liked among the other guild members, even if he kept entirely to himself. He made only one real friend while he was there, Prauf, though Cal never told him about his past.
After meeting Cere and Greez and joining Cere's quest to rebuild the Jedi Order, however, he slowly begins to open up again, revealing himself to be, at his core, kind, compassionate, earnest, and eager to help others. This kindness and compassion is such a defining part of his personality that it is evident all throughout the game; even in the beginning, when he is at his most guarded, it's the act of saving Prauf with the Force, in spite of the great risk, that reveals his existence to the Inquisitors and kicks the plot into motion.
His kindness and compassion also ground him, giving him a very strong moral compass. His motivation for rebelling against the Empire that took everything from him and so many others isn't for glory or revenge, but because people are suffering and he has the power to do something about it. After arriving on Kashyyyk and learning about the Wookiees being kept as slaves, he doesn't hesitate to help the Partisans free them; he even seemed reluctant to turn down Saw's offer to join their group because he needed to continue his quest for the holocron.
This renewed sense of purpose, rebuilding the Order and fighting the Empire, is what drives him for most of the game; he searches for the holocron with almost single-minded focus, becoming something of a one-man army as he explores different planets along his journey. He shows little fear for whatever the Empire (or the planets themselves) throw at him, proving himself to be adaptable, scrappy, and—when it comes to combat, at least—confident in his abilities, though he's appropriately humbled by the end of the game. Unlike many Jedi, he seems to enjoy throwing himself into the fray; he's best suited to taking action rather than sitting back.
But this doesn't mean that he goes looking for fights; when he first met Merrin, for example, he assures her that he's not her enemy and suggests they try to help each other, even though he'd just been told by Cere that Nightsisters were dangerous. Upon their second meeting, he seems just as reluctant to fight her, though he stands his ground and makes it clear that he will if he has to.
Outside of combat, though, he's a little more awkward and unsure. He doesn't have much experience making friends, but his instinct is, as always, kindness and earnestness. This is especially evident in his friendship with Merrin late in the game; even though she tried to attack him before, he shows empathy for her struggles and even gives her his lightsaber, his only weapon and most meaningful possession, as an olive branch. Unlike the mistrustful and standoffish person he was at the beginning of the game, Cal was willing to show vulnerability and let himself trust her, and because of that they were able to defeat Taron Malicos together and find the Astrium.
The most important part of his journey comes when he finally faces the trauma of surviving Order 66. Initially, Cal never spoke about his past, and would either avoid it or lash out whenever anyone brought it up. But by allowing Cere to help him, he's able to accept what he considered his failure in letting his master die, as well as his survivor's guilt; this gave him a sense of inner peace that made him more clear-eyed, level-headed, and wise, and is what ultimately led him to destroy the holocron of Force-sensitive children that could've rebuilt the Jedi Order. Rather than risk perpetuating the cycle of loss, pain, and fear—the same cycle he, Cere, Merrin, and Trilla had been trapped in—he chose instead to free them from it, even if it meant giving up the goal he'd spent so long trying to realize.
ABILITIES: As a Jedi, Cal is able to use the Force, which is basically a spiritual energy that people can tap into for supernatural abilities. Some of Cal's Force abilities include:

ABILITIES: As a Jedi, Cal is able to use the Force, which is basically a spiritual energy that people can tap into for supernatural abilities. Some of Cal's Force abilities include:
- Telekinesis: Cal can move objects and people with the Force.
- Force stasis: he is able to "slow down" objects and people with the Force for a short period of time.
- Force sense and visions: he can usually sense incoming danger, though he won't necessarily know what the danger is, feel the pull or will of the Force, sense the Force in other people, and see visions of potential futures.
- Enhanced reflexes and athleticism: Cal is naturally athletic, but he can use the Force to enhance this in order to to run across walls, double jump in midair, and do other cool parkour moves. Force-enhanced reflexes also allow him to do things like deflect blaster bolts with his lightsaber.
- Psychometry: this is a rare Force ability that is innate, not learned; with this, Cal is able to read memories, even memories that are centuries old, from objects by touching them. He has a good amount of control over his psychometry, but particularly strong or traumatic experiences can overwhelm him.
His non-Force abilities include:
- Lightsaber combat: he is skilled with single-, double-, and dual-bladed lightsaber combat, having trained in the use of a lightsaber since he was a child.
- Parkour/athleticism/strength: as a former rigger, a very physically demanding and dangerous job, he is able to scale sheer walls, jump great distances, balance on thin beams, etc.
- Mechanic: Cal is a proficient mechanic, able to modify and make repairs to his lightsaber and his droid. This skill, along with his psychometry, also enables him to pilot or operate unfamiliar vehicles.
PERSONAL EFFECTS:
- His ratty old Guild uniform and poncho
- His tool belt and harness
- His dual-bladed lightsaber
- Wrist comm
- Headphones
- Most importantly, BD-1
PRIZED POSSESSION: His old lightsaber, the one he lost during Order 66.
