CHARACTER NAME: Cal Kestis
AGE: Unspecified, but around 18
CANON: Star Wars (specifically, Jedi: Fallen Order)
CANON POINT: Post-game, after he escapes Nur and destroys the holocron.
BACKGROUND/HISTORY: (spoilers for the ending of JFO)

Cal grew up as a member of the Jedi Order, a religious order of Force users who acted as guardians and peacekeepers throughout their galaxy. Like the vast majority of Jedi, Cal was taken in as a baby by the Order to be raised and trained in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. It's not specified exactly when, but when he was around 10 to 12 years old, he became a Padawan—in other words, an apprentice—to Master Jaro Tapal, and was assigned to the ship Albedo Brave along with his Master.

This was during the time of the Clone Wars, a huge galactic war between the Republic, which the Jedi served as leadership in their army, and the Separatists. While it's unclear if Cal ever held rank in the Grand Army of the Republic, Jaro Tapal certainly did, and so he was definitely exposed to the war while training under his Master. At the end of the war, the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, Sheev Palpatine, essentially staged a coup, declared himself Emperor, and labelled the entire Jedi Order traitors, including Cal and his Master, ordering for them to be executed by their own troops in a galaxy-wide genocide of Jedi known as the Purge, or Order 66.

Because his Master sacrificed himself in order to save his Padawan, Cal was one of the very, very few Jedi survivors of Order 66, and he went into hiding on the planet Bracca, working as a rigger in the scrapyards there. After five years of hiding his identity as a Jedi, he used the Force to save a friend's life, blowing his cover and forcing him to go on the run from the Empire and their Inquisitors. While trying to escape, he was picked up by another Jedi survivor, Cere Junda, and her pilot, Greez, and they convinced him to join them in a mission to search for a holocron (think Jedi flash drive) containing a list of Force-sensitive children, which would allow the group to start rebuilding the fallen Jedi Order. (Boom, title drop.)

This led Cal on what was basically a wild goose chase throughout the galaxy to find this holocron. While he eventually succeeded, he ended up destroying the holocron in the end, protecting the children on the list from ever being targeted by the Empire.

PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: n/a
PERSONALITY:

At the beginning of the game, a lot of Cal's personality is directly shaped by Order 66, and the trauma, loss, grief, and guilt that it caused. It made Cal distrustful, reclusive, and paranoid of being discovered as a Jedi survivor. While in hiding on Bracca, he kept almost entirely to himself, and he was quiet, hard-working, and generally well-liked among his coworkers. He made only one real friend while he was there, Prauf, though Cal never told him about his past.

After joining Cere and Greez, he slowly begins to open up again, revealing himself to be, at his core, kind, compassionate, earnest, and eager to help others. This kindness and earnestness is such a defining part of his personality that it is evident all throughout the game; even in the beginning, when he is at his most guarded, it's the act of saving Prauf with the Force, in spite of the great risk, that reveals his existence to the Empire and jumpstarts the plot.

Rebuilding the Order and fighting the Empire gives him a new purpose, and this is what drives him for most of the game; he searches for the holocron with almost single-minded focus, and he proves himself to be adaptable, resilient, and—when it comes to combat, at least—confident in his abilities. (Though he's appropriately humbled by the end of the game, don't worry.)

Despite the danger of the Empire on his tail, he seems to enjoy the adventure, though he does eventually get a little worn down by the end of the game. He's best suited to taking action rather than sitting back, though he seems to have no problem taking direction from others. When it comes to conflict, he usually tries to deescalate first and find common ground, and only fights if there's no other option—though he will stand his ground if necessary.

Outside of combat, though, he's a little more awkward and unsure. He doesn't have much recent experience making friends, and it definitely shows, but he still tends to default to his innate kindness and earnestness when meeting others and getting to know them. That doesn't mean he isn't a little impertinent and prone to some wisecracking at times, and his sense of humor is definitely more on the sarcastic and deadpan side of things. It's pretty hard to get him to lose his cool, but if he's angry or upset with someone he tends to get curt and shut them out.

By the end of the game, he's able to accept what he considered his failure in letting his master die, as well as his survivor's guilt; this gives him a sense of inner peace that makes him more clear-eyed, level-headed, and wise, and is what ultimately led him to destroy the holocron of Force-sensitive children that could've rebuilt the Jedi Order, rather than risk exposing them to the Empire, even if it meant giving up the goal he'd spent so long trying to realize.

SUITABILITY:

As touched on in his personality section, the huge loss of his entire way of life has forced him to become very adaptable and resilient—he definitely considers himself a survivor in every sense of the word. After the Purge, and especially after outing himself as a Jedi, he's lived in constant danger, either from the Empire and/or the hostile planets he visited while searching for the holocron, and so that's nothing new to him. He's also very used to living with very little, since working as a scrapper on Bracca and then living on the run are both pretty much as far as you can get from glamorous. He'll be fine with roughing it.

His greatest strength in this kind of setting will probably be his combat skills, as he has a lot of experience not only fighting for his life but also prioritizing defending and protecting others' lives. He's also pretty skilled with machinery and fixing things, so that'll probably be handy to have. Also, he actually really loves nature and exploring, and he's really good at traversing rough terrain (like... swinging from vines or free climbing sheer cliffs good) so he'll probably be really eager to set off and explore the place!

ABILITIES/SKILLS:

As a Jedi, Cal is able to use the Force, which is the energy that exists in all living things and can allow those that are sensitive to it to tap into that energy for superhuman abilities. Jedi are able to use telekinesis, telepathy, empathy, the "mind trick" or ability to influence or control the thoughts of others, healing, precognition through "Force visions," enhanced reflexes, agility, and strength, etc. They're also able to create barriers with the Force, sedate others or put them to sleep, sense other Force users, "disturbances" in the Force, and places where the Force is strong or weak.

That said, Cal was just an apprentice when his training was cut short due to Order 66, so he might not have learned or mastered all Jedi abilities—it's kind of unknown, so I sort of err to only using abilities that he's used in the game.

Force abilities that he's demonstrated using include:

▶ Telekinesis: moving objects and people with the Force.
▶ Force stasis: the ability to "slow down" or "freeze" objects and people with the Force for a short period of time.
▶ Force sense and visions: sensing incoming danger, though he won't necessarily know what the danger is, feeling the pull or "will" of the Force, sensing the Force in other people, and seeing visions of the past and potential futures.
▶ Enhanced strength, reflexes, and athleticism: Cal is naturally athletic, but he can use the Force to enhance this in order to to run across walls, double jump in midair, and do other cool parkour moves. Force-enhanced reflexes also allow him to do things like deflect blaster bolts with his lightsaber.
▶ Psychometry: this is a rare Force ability that is innate, not learned; with this, Cal is able to touch objects and read the history and memories attached to them, even if they're centuries old. He has a good amount of control over his psychometry, but particularly strong or traumatic experiences can overwhelm him. One notable use case is that he can use psychometry to perform physical skills he doesn't already know; for example, after touching Cere's hallikset (i.e. space guitar), he was able to play a song she wrote on it, even though he doesn't actually know how to play any instruments.

His non-Force-related skills include:

▶ Lightsaber combat: he is skilled with single-, double-, and dual-bladed lightsaber combat, having trained in the use of a lightsaber since he was a child.
▶ Mechanic: he's a proficient mechanic, able to modify and make repairs to his lightsaber and his droid. This skill, along with his psychometry, also enables him to pilot or operate unfamiliar vehicles.

INVENTORY:

▶ His lightsaber
▶ BD-1
▶ Multi-tool
▶ Rebreather
▶ Climbing claws
